Although the summer of 1987 was rain-soaked the indomitable team of CoI artists and makers took up residency in the beautiful woods on the Mannington estate in North Norfolk for three weeks with the aim of creating an extraordinary experience for the visiting public.
Amanda Glover and Maggie Campbell cleared half a hillside of bracken and fern to create earth paintings, constructed a rustic entrance and created ghostly white deer, grumpy mushroom folk, a confusing cross-roads and a massive fox-cum-hunter. Helen Crocker was a sprite who appeared as a flying apparition and a mandrake root (also known as a witches mannikin). Gill Alexander played the haunting sounds of a double bass in an ancient clearing, and Jan Dungey was the narrator and guide through this magical world of trickery and confusion.
Anglia TV sent a somewhat bemused presenter to cover the project for their Folio arts series.
